Occasionally, animals may require life saving blood transfusions from either a fresh blood product or frozen plasma. The AEC, as a central facility to many referring area clinics, houses a small blood bank for just this purpose. Currently, staff pets have provided a small pool of donators but the AEC is still in need of more.

If you are interested in having your pet become a lifesaving donor, please contact the AEC for to see if your pet would be a good candidate. A few requirements do apply.

Canine

  • 50 pounds or greater
  • between the ages of 1 and 7
  • a good personality (allowing restraint for good jugular venous access)
  • no history of heart murmurs, seizures or heartworm disease
Feline
  • no program established at this time

Compensation: For participation in the program, the AEC would like to reward the donor animals and their owners. They will receive a 10% discount on future services at the AEC, a free health exam prior to each donation and recognition on the AEC website as a blood donor.
